Review: For years Ernsting’s Aviation and Space Medicine has set and maintained a benchmark as a reference book for the principles and practice of Aerospace Medicine. The textbook, currently in its 5th edition, has been a comprehensive study material for generations of flight surgeons. However, it has been a long-standing demand by specialists and residents in Aerospace Medicine across the globe to have the same information in a concised manner. Handbook of Aviation and Space Medicine (1st Edition) probably is the answer!

The book contains 64 chapters which comprehensively cover all aspects of clinical aerospace medicine and relevant physiology. The first few chapters introduce the reader to the various platforms used in aviation followed by the operating environment, physiological challenges encountered in aviation and the mitigating countermeasures. Further, the chapters cover the human factors aspects of aviation and conclude with clinical aviation medicine. In order to make the text concise yet comprehensive, the editors have forgone the detailed pathophysiology and clinical aspects of medical disabilities while retaining the aeromedical concerns, evaluation and disposition.

Opinion about the Book: The information presented in the book has been well organized and presented in a note-based form, thereby making it easier to refer. Text has been presented in a bulleted format throughout the book for better appreciation by the reader. The book contains many illustrations and tables which are simpler to understand. The book will undoubtedly serve as an indispensable companion to all military and civil aviation medicine practitioners.

Recommendation: A must read for everyone involved in the field of aviation and space who intends to seek current knowledge on the subject. The book will serve as a refresher for Residents appearing in various academic examinations during their Residency in Aerospace Medicine. It will also serve as a ready reference for Aviation Medical Examiners who are involved in the process of certification of the military and civil aircrew.
